This can be done through a variety of methods, such as hand lay – up, where workers use brushes or rollers to apply the resin evenly over the fabric. Another approach is resin infusion, where the fabric is placed in a mold, and the resin is drawn into the fabric under vacuum pressure. Resin infusion generally results in a more consistent resin distribution and better mechanical properties.

Once the fiberglass fabric is fully impregnated with resin, it is carefully placed on one side of the honeycomb core. A release film is often placed between the fabric and the mold to prevent the panel from sticking. The process is then repeated for the other side of the core.

Curing and Finishing

After the fiberglass skins are laminated onto the honeycomb core, the panel needs to be cured. Curing is a critical step that determines the final properties of the panel. The curing process involves subjecting the panel to specific temperature and pressure conditions for a set period of time.

In an oven – curing method, the panel is placed in an oven, and the temperature is gradually increased to the curing temperature of the resin, which is typically between 80°C and 180°C depending on the type of resin used. The panel is held at this temperature for a specified time, usually a few hours, to allow the resin to cross – link and harden.

Alternatively, some manufacturers use autoclave curing. An autoclave is a pressurized chamber that can apply both heat and pressure simultaneously. The additional pressure in the autoclave helps to remove any voids in the resin and ensures better adhesion between the fiberglass skins and the honeycomb core. Autoclave – cured panels generally have higher quality and better mechanical properties compared to oven – cured panels.

Once the panel is cured, it undergoes a finishing process. This may include trimming the edges of the panel to the desired size, sanding the surface to achieve a smooth finish, and applying a protective coating if necessary. The protective coating can enhance the panel’s resistance to UV radiation, moisture, and abrasion.

Quality Control

Throughout the manufacturing process, strict quality control measures are in place to ensure that the fiberglass honeycomb panels meet the required standards. This includes inspecting the raw materials for any defects, monitoring the manufacturing process parameters such as temperature, pressure, and resin content, and conducting various tests on the finished panels.
